Most Powerful Tool

Let’s talk about the most powerful tool in a high impact personal statement.

I’m Dr. Louise Wen. Essay coach and board certified physician. I’m going to give you two personal examples. A and B. They are both true and are saying the same thing, but notice the differences.

Example A: I worked a full time job while going to college full time. I am an empathic person. I can handle high stress and high stakes situations. I speak Spanish. Helping people is very important for me.

Example B: While attending college, I worked as a full time domestic violence victims advocate. One client in criminal court was so stressed that she was trembling and had broken out in hives. I coached her in her native Spanish to be strong and stay calm. She testified against her abuser, who stood just a few feet away from her, and the judge granted her a court order of protection.

Do you notice the difference? Example B conveys the concepts from Example A in the form of a story. Story is your number one, most powerful tool.

Harness the power of story.
