Are you afraid to sound like you’re bragging in your personal statement?
I’m Dr. Louise Wen. Essay coach and board certified physician.
I see this problem all the time with my clients. One client mentioned “some online classes” and it turned out to be a Stanford University certificate course. Another client made no mention of her MBA in her personal statement.
And I ask them, Why didn’t you include that? I’m so confused.
And inevitably, they tell me. I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging. I understand. Bragging doesn’t feel right.
But advocating is something that comes naturally to many of us, especially for those of us in the medical profession. So if you find yourself holding back because you’re afraid to come across as bragging, pretend that you’re writing about your best friend, or someone you love. And write your personal statement from that angle of advocating for the best person you know.
